First day leaving Bergen

first day leaving bergen

  • Start from Bergen first day
If you arrive in the afternoon in Bergen and pick up the van you might not want to drive too long on the first day.
If you want to leave Bergen right away and go out in the countryside we recommend the following routes:
  • To Hardangerfjord
Route Bergen-Nordheimsund-Øystese–Granvin-Kinsarvik (crossing the bridge in Hardangerfjorden).
There is a camping site in Øystese and Kinsarvik if you prefer staying the night in a camping site.
  • Alternative Route Bergen-Nordheimsund–Tørrvikbygd–Ferry-Jondal-Odda or Rosendal.
This is estimated 3-4 hours driving.
  • Glesvær – a small village nearby Bergen
If you want to stay nearby Bergen, the first night and want to get out of the town.
  • Drive to Glesvær, a former small fishing village, in Sotra west of Bergen. There you will find a small cozy café and a small boat harbor with a parking space. It is about 45 minutes to drive.
  • To Voss – Flåm
If you plan to travel through Voss and further to Flåm, we recommend driving to Voss through Hardanger.
    Bergen-Nordheimsund-Øystese-Granvin-Voss-Flåm
It takes an hour longer, but it is a very scenic trip along part of the Hardangerfjord.
  • Narrow road route 1
  • If you want to leave Bergen and plan to go North and want to avoid the main road E36.
Try E16 Bergen-Trengereid-Dale (Take road569)-Stamneshella-Mo (Stay overnight if you prefer)-Romarheim (back to E39 further north). This route takes approximately two hours.
  • Warning! This is a very scenic route, but some places are with very narrow roads and tunnels without light. You must be able to reverse the car and drive maybe many meters.

  •  Narrow route 2
  • Another option if you like narrow roads in scenic circumstances. Take the main road E39 Bergen-Knarvik-Matre. Take route 5442 from Matre to Bjordal. Then from Bjordal to Ortnevik (end of the road) and stay overnight. Park at the local old school. Access to shower and toilet. Return to Oppedal (back to E39) and take the ferry across the fjord.
Warning! This is a very scenic route, but some places are with very narrow roads and tunnels without light. You must be able to reverse the car and drive maybe many meters.
